In 2012, I was a new mom and my son’s first birthday was coming up. I have always had a love for baking, and I really wanted to be able to make a cute cake for his birthday. So, I started watching YouTube videos.
That’s all it took for me to fall in love with the art of cake decorating.
I started spending all my spare time watching how-to videos and teaching myself different techniques. For the next few years, I used all my family and friend’s birthdays as an excuse to practice my skills.
I took the leap and officially started my own business, Cakes by Laura Newhouse, in 2018. It took me by surprise how quickly my clientele grew. Within the year I was booked out well in advance. Learning how to manage my schedule and only say yes to a reasonable amount of cake requests was the hardest part of being a new business owner.
In the meantime, my family continued to grow and I am now a mom to 3 wonderful kids. I always let their imaginations take over for their yearly birthday orders to give myself an extra challenge. I particularly remember last year, when my daughter requested a pink dino dragon with long rapunzel hair on a tiny pink castle cake. They are a big reason my creative skill has been honed over the years and is now one of my best assets.
There is nothing more satisfying to me than a smooth cake canvas. Perfecting my buttercream edges has become my specialty.
I also enjoy creating anything from fun fondant figures to intricate buttercream flowers.
I love helping other cake artists improve their skills and will always share my tips and tricks.
